There are two types of air filters in most cars --

The engine air filter has been around forever, keeping a steady flow of clean air going into your engine, where it’s metered and mixed with fuel to provide combustion and power.

Most engine air filters cost $30-40 -- Air filters are located in the engine compartment, where they’re usually easy to check and change.

The cabin air filter, also known as a pollen filter keeps a steady flow of air flowing into the heating and air-conditioning system. 

Because cabin air filters filter much finer particles than engine air filters, they can get dirty, smelly, and clogged easier. So if you’ve noticed a new foul smell in your car, or reduced heating and air-conditioning performance, you probably need a cabin air filter.

Most cabin air filters cost $40-50 including installation -- Cabin air filters are usually located behind the glovebox and can be challenging to replace.

We recommend changing both your cabin air filter yearly or every 15,000 miles, but it really depends on how much you drive and where. In dusty or heavy traffic conditions with poor air quality, you could be replacing the filters more often. Air filters usually last 30-40K.
